Pen Pal

One day in my American Studies class, my teacher asked us all to write a short and simple letter to send to all the Chinese students she just recently met and taught. Let me back track here, she went to China for 3 weeks for some teacher thing. It had something to do with Chinese teachers coming to America and looking at how we teach or are taught and then American teachers, including mine, going to China to do some learning for themselves. Bringing this all back to the title, my teacher was asked if her students, us, would write letters/ send emails, to her students that are learning English. She was intrigued, agreed, and so this post was born.
First I picked out the student I wanted to write to. She is a middle school aged girl, whose “English” name is Fly (So Cute!) I wrote my first letter to her in October or November last year. I told her my name, asked her some questions about her family, and then of course I had to draw her a picture. So I drew a little monkey swinging on a vine. (Sorry I didn’t take a picture! I would but you know its 1,000s of miles away) Then she emailed me back once their class finally received our traditional letters.
Sadly, some of the Chinese students did not write back to my classmates, but I was lucky because mine did. I will add our conversations starting with her reply to my letter up to the most recent email, below.

I heard from the students in my class that when they got emails back, that their pen pals sent pictures. I thought that was a cool idea, so I started a little trend.

And so far I am waiting for a response back.
Different cultures are so interesting to me, and I love that I can interact with someone who lives on the opposite side of the world. Someone who grew up living in a culture that has been developing and changing for thousands of years compared to America that has only just begun in comparison, but has already developed our own diverse culture. Hopefully this pen pal thing will last and maybe one day even meet Fly in person! Just thinking out loud here, but it’s late, I have school tomorrow, and I have to prepare myself to wake up in 6 hours so good night everyone!
